Literacy as a Human Rights

“Education is the most powerful tool we have for changing the world…Education breaks the cycle of poverty, opens doors to opportunity, and empowers individuals to transform their communities.”  A Rotary Trustee’s Message

Accepting the Challenge

Rotary Clubs have a long-standing commitment to addressing global challenges, including illiteracy. With their international network and resources, Rotary Clubs are well-positioned to take a leadership role in the fight against worldwide illiteracy. Many clubs already support literacy initiatives by providing books, funding educational programs, and partnering with local schools and libraries in their communities. While the willingness to lead may vary from club to club, Rotary’s core values and history suggest a strong readiness to champion this cause on a global scale.

A Growing Challenge with Far-Reaching Consequences

Rising worldwide illiteracy rates are a pressing concern with profound economic, social, and cultural implications. The Rotary Literacy Initiative is addressing this challenge head-on in the hope that worldwide Rotary Clubs will join in to help turn the tide and ensure a brighter, more inclusive future for all children.

The Rotary Literacy Initiative provides an innovative, comprehensive, free digital media library of “learn-to-read” and life skills resources ( physical books and digital media) that are delivered to underserved communities through Rotary Literacy Advocates. These free resources are available to any qualified Rotary Club that registers to become a Rotary Literacy Advocate.

The Rotary Literacy Initiative offers two types of literacy resources:

  • The Reading Adventure Island streaming websit_e_—a safe, on-demand, interactive literacy website available free to all children, 24/7
